What began as a two-fold dream has blossomed into a cornerstone of outdoor recreation in Southwest Wisconsin. This fall, Bluedog Cycles proudly celebrates 21 years of inspiring movement, building community, and transforming Viroqua into a cycling destination.
In 2005, Pete and Alycann Taylor packed up their western life, their newborn daughter Wilma, and a vision: to return to their Wisconsin roots and create a space where outdoor recreation could thrive. With little more than passion and purpose, they opened Bluedog Cycles in a modest 600-square-foot shop next to the Cheese Corner. Today, their impact spans trails, seasons, and generations.
A Vision That Pedaled Forward Pete, a nationally recognized cycling mechanic and educator, and Alycann, a powerhouse in organizational leadership, brought complementary strengths to their mission. Together, they turned a town with no cycling culture into a vibrant hub for riders of all ages and abilities. From mountain biking to Nordic skiing, snowshoeing to fat biking, Bluedog Cycles has expanded its reach while staying true to its founding belief: that the right ride unlocks freedom, joy, and connection to the natural world.
Growing Family, Growing Legacy As their family grew with the birth of daughter Lucy, so did their business. Bluedog Cycles evolved through three locations, including the once infamous Brewdog Coffee a collaborative coffee corner with Wonderstate. Their staff, though small, is mighty. A team of passionate individuals who live and breathe the shop’s mission.
Camp Bluedog & Vernon Trails In 2006, they launched Camp Bluedog, a Midwest mountain bike camp for youth ages 6–18, now revered as one of the region’s top weekend camps. They also founded Vernon Trails, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to shared-use trails and outdoor recreation across the region.
Community at the Core Bluedog Cycles has collaborated with local schools to promote cycling safety and partnered with local businesses like Vernon Health, Organic Valley, Wonderstate Coffee, and the Viroqua Food Co-op to amplify their impact. Their annual mountain bike race, Pert Near 20, returns to Sidie Hollow Park on October 17, 2026 drawing riders and spectators from across the Midwest.
A Community That Shows Up “A friend once told us, ‘If you’re passionate about what you want to accomplish, this community will show up for you.’ That’s proven true time and time again,” says Alycann. “We’re grateful beyond words.”
As Bluedog Cycles pedals into its third decade, the Taylors remain committed to getting people outside to play, no matter their age, ability, or experience. With ebikes, new trails, and fresh ideas on the horizon, the ride is far from over.
Join the celebration. Ride the legacy. Discover the freedom.
